报告介绍 | Abstract:
The past decade has witnessed intensive research aimed at investigating the role of band-structure topology and discovering topological materials. In this talk, I will introduce our most recent progress on novel topological phases discovered in a well-known family of compounds, transition metal dichalcogenides (WTe2 and MoTe2). These phases include the Weyl semimetal, the monopole-nodal-ring semimetal and the higher-order topological insulator. Further, we find that the band-structure topology gives rise to an exotic nonlinear quantum Hall effect that exists with the time-reversal symmetry, distinct from the ordinary Hall effect.

Binghai Yan received his PhD in physics at IASTU, Tsinghua University in 2008. After that, he worked as a Humboldt scholar in Germany and a postdoc in Stanford University. In 2012, he became a group leader in the Max Planck Institute in Dresden, Germany. Since 2017, he joins the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, as an assistant professor. He is a young scientist recognized for his theoretical study on topological materials, especially concrete predictions concerning materials that carry specific topological characteristics, many of which were verified by experiments.
