Single-molecule spectroscopy (SMS), as a family of ultra-sensitive analytical techniques, has been widely used in many research areas, especially in biology and nano science. In contrast to traditional ensemble measurements, single-molecule studies have already demonstrated their unique capability to resolve heterogeneity out of complex systems/processes and to clear up the ambiguity therein among previous ensemble experiments. Here, several applications of SMS in biophysics and molecular electronics will be presented.
